How credits work
Every time Cleo HQ uses AI on your behalf, it costs one credit. This includes sending a chat message, evaluating an idea, generating documents, and proposing MVP features. Some actions use multiple credits — for example, evaluating an idea uses 3 credits (Cleo, Penny, and Mark each analyse it in parallel).
Here's a rough guide to credit usage:
- Chat message: 1 credit per message
- Idea evaluation: 3 credits (3 specialists in parallel)
- MVP proposal: 1 credit
- Vision finalisation: 1 credit
- Document generation: 1 credit per document (spec, architecture, design)
- Worker greeting: 1 credit
Credits reset daily at midnight. The sidebar shows your current usage. When you hit the limit, you'll see a prompt to upgrade or wait until tomorrow. BYOK users bypass credit limits entirely.
How billing works
All paid plans are billed monthly through Stripe. You can cancel anytime from Settings > Billing, or manage your subscription through the Stripe customer portal. There is no free trial — the free tier with 10 daily credits is the trial.
What happens when you downgrade
You keep all of your data — projects, conversations, outputs, and history. Usage limits for the lower tier take effect on your next login. If you had a BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) API key set, it is automatically cleared when your subscription ends to prevent unlimited access on the free tier.
Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)
Pro and above can provide their own Anthropic API key in Settings. When a BYOK key is set, daily message limits are bypassed entirely — you pay Anthropic directly for usage. Your key is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before storage and is never logged or shared.
